Translation of civil status certificates — German ↔ French

A certified translation recognised by French authorities

Whether you are getting married, applying for French citizenship, dealing with an estate or registering an event with the French civil registry, French authorities require a certified translation of any certificate issued in German. Only a translation signed and stamped by an expert translator registered with a French Court of Appeal carries that value.

Julie Auger-Kantor, sworn German ↔ French translator and interpreter and court-appointed expert at the Paris Court of Appeal, translates civil status certificates issued in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other German-speaking countries, as well as French certificates to be submitted to authorities in German-speaking countries. Divorce decrees and certificates of inheritance are covered on the legal and court documents page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to provide the original?
No. A clear scan or photo is enough to produce the translation. The receiving authority may, however, ask to see the original.
Will the préfecture accept your translation?
Yes. A translation by an expert translator registered with a French Court of Appeal is valid with all French authorities.
Will a German authority accept your translation of a French certificate?
That is for each authority to decide. It is best to check beforehand with the registry office or the relevant authority in Germany, Austria or Switzerland whether it accepts a translation certified in France.
